The brief called for house for a family of four in a village in Ratnagiri. The cost of the house was to be under INR 100,000. To achieve this the design utilizes a number of cost saving principles from Laurie Baker. Indigenous chira stone walls, frameless doors and windows made from simple planks, natural ventilation through stone coursework jalis, pit latrine, floor made from leftover stone scrapes, stone-on-edge lintels, roof overhangs for shading and to protect the walls, and an attic space to keep the house cool, are some of the strategies used. A living area, kitchen, and two sleeping areas are placed around an enclosed courtyard. The courtyard becomes an extension of the rooms giving the small house a sense of openness.
